I have saved thousands of quotes...often from books I did not own....just typed them out. Unfortunately, I did not save what came before this one. I just looked at what I saved after it and I can't be sure, but I think he is writing about young people, who are dogmatic about there being no absolutes. This is what comes after it....
"There is something still worse, which is when those youths come to possess an aggressive, fanatical, intolerant scepticism, a scepticism that is dogmatical in its antidogmaticism. . . . I have known some who became frenzied when anybody affirmed anything, and they in turn were affirming that nothing could be affirmed, which is as truly an affirmation as any other."
He argues for a conditional confidence and dogmatism, i.e. be strong in your opinions but always be willing to change them with new understandings.
I think he was describing Hollywood-ites, Political-ites, HIghest Education-ites, and all others who either never experienced having to work for a living or have deliberately forgotten that experience. I've encountered some and it seemed to be their way to keep doing what they're doing without having to think about it. Just what came into my head as I read the quote.
I agree with the sentiment. Who was he describing?
